The current exhibitions at monca are Bike-Pedia and Northern California on Wikipedia.

Bike-pedia features original artwork featuring bicycles, as a primary or secondary subject matter. This juried exhibition coincides with Chico’s Wildflower Century Bicycle Ride and monca’s exhibition of Northern California on Wikipedia, featuring images by Wikipedia photographer Fritz Schulenburg.

Exhibition dates: March 23 – May 14, 2023

Opening reception on Friday, March 24, 2023, from 6 – 8 pm.

Each work displayed in the exhibition will be accompanied by a QR code that leads you to the Wikipedia page the photo is used on. Each photo serves as an illustration of a Northern California-related topic. That way, you will be able to make the connection between the – sometimes familiar – subject of the photo, the print in front of you at the museum, and the global website where millions of people around the globe find information about Northern California.

The story behind the shot: a look behind the scenes of taking photos for Wikipedia
Over the course of about an hour, Wikipedia photographer Fritz Schulenburg will tell the stories behind some of the works in the exhibition. He will give an insight into some of the fascinating moments he encountered when taking images, from encounters with wildlife, to his own method of staying safe when hiking in the dark to get an early-morning shot.

Hands-on workshop for beginners: uploading your own photos to Wikipedia
How do you get your images onto Wikipedia? Wikipedia photographer Fritz Schulenburg will walk participants through all steps of the process – from the creation of your own Wikipedia user account, to adding your photo to an encyclopedic article. Participants will be able to ask questions and learn about the benefits of sharing their work under a free license.
Saturday, April 29 at 2pm – Inviting all High School, Chico State, and Butte students photography students, and the community at large!

What motivates someone to take photos for Wikipedia? Can anyone become a Wikipedia photographer? Which gear do you use? How do I find out which articles on Wikipedia need more photos? Are there any specific technical requirements for photos taken for Wikipedia? What’s a free license? – These are just some examples of questions that people have asked in the past… please bring your own!

How to share the beauty of Northern California with people around the world through Wikipedia
Wikipedia photographer Fritz Schulenburg will talk about why Wikipedia’s articles about Northern California could greatly benefit from more people volunteering as photographers. He will walk participants through his thought process with regard to selecting subjects, planning the shot, and for ensuring that the results are both informational and visually appealing.
