About Footsteps to You – This unique collaboration with Butte County Office of Education, the Black Voice Foundation, and the Museum of Northern California Art (monca) is like nothing before in Butte County.

Footsteps to You, presented by the Black Voice Foundation, features rare primary source artifacts. The collection hopes to inspire empathy and conversation. Jerry Gore, a prominent historian who served as a docent on Footsteps to Freedom Underground Railroad Study Tours for 20 years began this collection of artifacts. His collection was gifted to the Black Voice Foundation in 2016. Over the years, the foundation and Hardy Brown II have added not only more artifacts but the stories behind them. “The Gore Collection has a focus on building historical empathy by immersing you in a world where people were considered objects – a prejudice that was entirely based on the color of one’s skin.”

The journey through this exhibition takes you from pre-slavery to Civil Rights to today. It tells a story of humanity, perseverance, and courage. “When students and other visitors see these artifacts, it’s not just show-and-tell. It’s a conversation. Hardy Brown, II leads conversations on empathy and history with hundreds of teachers and thousands of students where learners gain knowledge and power of Freedom Movements.

”We challenge visitors to ask themselves ‘In 100 years, what will history say about you? We are more alike than different.”

About Black Voices in Art – As artists, the concept of using images, lines, strokes, words, and color tells stories and weaves tales of the past, present, and future. As Black artists, those stories may take on a different emphasis recalling a history that is both the past and the present. Respecting these voices and working toward a better understanding of our shared experiences is the desired outcome as we work together to form historical empathy.
