The Museum of Northern California Art (monca) is seeking two or three Northern California artists for each session to participate in Behind the Scenes – Artists in Residency – 2021. A $500 stipend will be paid upon fulfilling your residency requirements. Artists must be present each day during museum hours (Thursday-Sunday, 11am-5pm) and during the reception. Artists can show their processes, meet museum visitors, and develop their art. Work can be collaborative, demonstrative, installation art, performance art, 2-D or 3-D art. We encourage collaborative relationships in the artist community.
To apply: Submit a 1-2 page proposal with a concept for your residency and provide 3-5 images of sample works, which relate to your proposal. Indicate your preference/availability for the two sessions. The first session is 16 days. The second session is 19 days (monca is closed on Thanksgiving Day). Application fee $25 is due by September 1 at 5pm. The museum’s exhibition committee will make the final choice of artists. Artists will be notified of the decision on or before September 7. monca will provide space and PR. All materials/equipment/supplies are provided by the artist. Restrictions: No hazardous materials in the gallery space.
ELIGIBILITY: Artist must be a resident of Northern California (defined as San Jose and all points north, east, and west to the state border.). Any exhibited artworks must remain in the gallery workspace until 5 p.m. on the last day of the residency.

○ The form requires: Artist’s name, address, phone(s), email address, along with image files and info for each sample piece. Also, a space to upload a résumé or c.v. and the 1-2 page proposal
○ Image files and labeling: Images should be in .jpg or .png format. Name the file with the artist’s name followed by 1, 2, 3 etc. Example joesmith1.jpg

ENTRY FEE: $25 (non-refundable): Payment (check, cash or credit card) must reach monca by September 1, at 5 pm ● Make check payable to monca and write “Behind the Scenes- Artists in Residency 2021” application fee” in the memo. Your canceled check is your receipt

Set up of gallery workspace: Session 1: Sept 28-29, 11 am – 3 pm Session 2: Oct 26 – 27, 11 am – 3 pm.
Receptions: Session 1: Oct 23, 5:30 – 7:30 pm, Session 2: Nov 20, 5:30 – 7:30 pm
After Session: All work, supplies and equipment must be removed after 5 pm (once museum closes) on the last day of the residency, or the next day (Monday) between 11 and 1. Works/Materials/Equipment left beyond November 5 (for Session 1) or December 10 (for Session 2) will be assessed a storage fee of $5 per piece, per day (Thurs-Sun). Works/Materials/Equipment left beyond December 29, 2021, will become the property of monca.
Insurance is the responsibility of the artist. monca will be diligent in the care of artwork but is not responsible for loss or damage that might occur.
Onsite at 900 Esplanade on the following dates: Session 1: September 28-29, and Session 2: October 26-27, at the same time the residency workspace is being set up. Please follow current safety protocols. For any work for sale during the residency, please provide a price list with your name and artwork titles. The price should include a 50% museum commission. Prices will not appear on the gallery signage, but instead will be available on request at the reception desk.
Any finished work being shown (for sale or display) must be delivered ready to hang or display. Works to hang on the wall must be wired; no sawtooth hangers. Any special display or hanging needs must be described in the application.
Artist’s name, phone, and title of work must be on the back of each artwork.
For anything needing to be shipped by monca, arrangements should be made in advance. Postage/packaging/shipping insurance are the responsibility of the artist and will be required upfront. The museum will not be held responsible for anything damaged in shipment.
