NEWS RELEASE - New Nonprofit Receives Magnificent Gift - Chico, CA.

Media Contact: Trudy Duisenberg. Secretary, monCA. Email: contact@monca.org.

Pat Macias, president of the recently formed Museum of Northern California Art (monCA), announces a very significant gift has been made to the nonprofit organization. Collector Reed Applegate has bequeathed his entire art collection to monCA. Macias notes that this charitable gift will be a lasting legacy benefiting citizens of the North State. The gift also provides a solid foundation upon which monCA can expand for years to come.

A native of Chico and a graduate of CSU,Chico, Reed Applegate is an avid collector of Northern California art. He began to focus on purchasing from area artists in the mid 1970's. Applegate has collected numerous works by major artists including prints by Wayne Thiebaud, Roy De Forest, Nathan Olivera and Robert Arneson, paintings by Roland Peterson, Paul Wonner and California Society of Six member Maurice Logan and an ink wash figure drawing by David Park. His collection of over 300 works now includes painting, watercolors, prints, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, and photography.

Incorporated this past August, the mission of the Museum of Northern California Art is to make art accessible and promote awareness of Northern California artists through collections, exhibitions and educational programs. While it searches for a permanent facility, monCA is taking art to the public through a variety of outreach programs. More information about monCA can be found at www.monca.org.

Carrying the horse We did it! The Museum of Northern California Art has officially launched to the public and we could not have been happier with the response. The monCA booth at the Chico Palio this past Saturday gathered many supporters, got the Chico community thinking about a new art museum in town, and even saw people having a great time making their very own paper plate art. We also built and raced a horse for monCA. Stay tuned for photos of the event!

At our booth, we asked the question "What is a museum?" and here are some responses from Palio visitors:

  • A place to see beautiful things.
  • A celebration of local and national artists.
  • A place to learn more!
  • It's where your mind comes out of the box.
  • A place to learn about oneself.
  • A place where you learn about history.
  • A place to find a sense of place.
  • "A place of inspiration that lights a spark of hope in those who can only see in darkness?"- Larry G. Hayden Jr.
